Copyright 2007. Well, Mary Ellen, my old Thoroughbred mare, got an abcess. We live on an old property, the house was built in 1820, and whenever it rains some other horrible thing from the past washes up. This particular time, she stepped on a very old nail. It went into her foot about 1 inch into the cleft of the frog. It missed anything vital thankfully. But it was still terrible and required alot of care. The vet came several times. I had to keep it wrapped and in a boot. Every night, I had to unwrap and squirt some Betadine into the hole with a syringe that had this little thin plastic needle-like thing. I was able to get that thing right into the hole and squirt with all my might. This was one bad abcess. The vet told me that the abcess would probably burst out the top which is good because I will then be able to swill betadine right through it. Well, the third night into my squirting with all my might, I did not realize that the abcess had burst. I stuck the syringe into the hole, squeezed with all my might, and for better squeezing, I usually open my mouth and stick out my tongue. I know I am stronger that way. Well, the betadine swilled through, came out the other side and right into my mouth! UGH! The life of a horse woman....I wonder which event was worse, tasting abcess-laden Betadine or the day, I slipped under the full wheelbarrow and a ball ran right into my mouth...But that’s another story.
